The Ice Queen cometh... The extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers are looking very sorry for themselves after the most bitterly cold snowy couple of days - and there's colder nights to come! We can only wait in hope to see if our magnificent Madeira geranium, salvias and eucomis survive the experience.

Lolling around in a dressing gown and sweatpants trying to avoid the drafts from the kitchen door doesn't lend itself to cavorting, I must admit!
DeleteWithout a greenhouse it is impossible to protect our tender specimens, so basically it's "fingers crossed" - Salvia Amistad and ulignosa have survived being frozen before, but the Madeira geranium and eucomis are relative newcomers, so we don't know how much they'll tolerate with the meagre shelter we can offer against the house wall. Jx
Of course, I meant "draughts from the kitchen door". I am not American...

ReplyDeleteI get in such a muddle with draughts/drafts - the word seems to mean so many completely different things.

The English language is nothing if not complicated - especially when "draught(s)" may refer to cold air through a gap in your window, a type of ale, and the board game that the Americans call "Checkers", and "draft" might mean "unpublished version" and the notice when people get called-up to military service in wartime.
DeleteI often get in a muddle trying to explain to people whose first language is not English just how many different ways words with "-ough" in them can be pronounced - think about it!

The Eucomis bulb I found lying on the street last year will not be making another appearance in my garden this year as I pulled it up and slung it in the brown bin in disgust, ghastly thing.
