On whom those truths do rest

Anyone shedding any tears for the departure of Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby under a cloud? Not me.

It's another "snippets" post today, dear reader...

  • Somebody hire a proof-reader news: The web address of a porn site was inadvertently(?) printed on the packaging of the Xmas "little girl must-have" Wicked dolls!
  • Wobbly sets and under-rehearsed actors news: It is 60 years since the very first episode of long-running, and very successful, British soap opera Crossroads was broadcast. Such was its iconic "national treasure" status, it - and its star Noele Gordon aka "Meg Richardson" - was the subject of the fabulous Nolly, starring Helena Bonham-Carter.
  • Astronomical double-entendre news: There's a new probe into Uranus. Apparently there could be hidden life there...
  • Scissor Sisters news:

And the weather? Cold and dry - and a lot better than Andalusia at the moment!

  1. RIP Mr West. Sad news.
I loved Nolly! Not so much Crossroads - but without Crossroads we wouldn't have Acorn Antiques.
They don't pronounce Uranus like they used to! Though I do.

    1. Sad that Prunella outlived him - no-one expected that...

Nolly was simply superb! I remember Crossroads being on telly, but in our household I don't ever remember it being a regular "thing". My paternal grandmother apparently loved it. She died in her armchair during a particularly - ahem - gripping episode when I was a baby, or so I was told.

"Uranus jokes" were all the rage until the American pronunciation took over. Like everything else. Jx

  2. Great cartoon. I always have a hard time when someone says, ”It could be worse.” Yes, YOU could be the one being beaten, abused, misused, killed. THAT would be worse for YOU. Argh! And, damn, I am so tired of those probes!

    1. The cartoon is rather good.

Even better is the fun that the sub-editors across the media have been having with the Uranus headlines. such as: "Wind Blowing Out of Uranus Makes It Hard to Probe, NASA Complains", "Uranus could be more interesting than we thought" and "Scientists have cracked the mystery of Uranus and it's all about wind"... 3. Crossroads came back briefly in the early 2000s as I recall, without Benny and Miss Diane, it was bound to fail.

    1. It staggered on in the 80s as "Crossroads Motel" with Gabrielle Drake as manager (when they wrote out David and Barbara Hunter), then "Crossroads Kings Oak" (when Benny and Miss Diane got the chop), before someone put it out of its misery.

Reviving it in 2001 was doomed to failure, especially when Adam Chance murdered Jill Richardson, and even Jane Asher and a load of camp guest stars couldn't revive it. Apparently they ended it with one of those "it was all just a dream" plotlines, but there was probably nobody left watching it by then. Nolly was haunting it, is my guess. Jx
