Nose that's straight, a set of perfect teeth

Time flies when you're having fun, they say - and, as the weekend looms and we try and get ourselves in the mood for a party (despite the forecast that, after a week of gloriously warm and sunny weather, it is going to bloody rain tomorrow; as usual!), we shudder at the news that the gorgeous Russell Mael of Sparks is seventy years old today!

Sigh.

Sparks has always been a source of joy and full of the party spirit, so let's just pause right there and let the boys take it away - first, with this rather appropriate number...

Nose that's straight, a set of perfect teeth
You got a built-in seat, that makes you look effete
You know that looks, looks, looks, are why you rely on books

...and then, this:

This is the number one song in heaven
Why are you hearing it now, you ask
Maybe you're closer to here than you imagine
Maybe you're closer to here than you care to be
It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
It's number one, all over heaven
The number one song all over heaven

Love 'em.

Thank Disco It's Friday!

  2. If I found out i was pregnant with twins I'd call them Russell and Ron. Even if they were girls.

    1. As long as one of them grew a moustache, that would be excellent! Jx

  3. Bizzarely the first time I ever saw them was on the Open University - on a thing called Masterclass where songwriters talked about creating their hits. Ive looked for the clip on YouTube but not been able to find it (Chris Stein of Blondie also appeared not with Debbie, and Janis Ian)

I didn't realize they were a band. I also assumed they were a gay couple, which I'm sure is a mistake others have made.

    1. I can't remember where I first saw them, probably on Top of the Pops way back in 1974 with This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us. Certainly nothing as highbrow as Open University. As for them appearing like a gay couple, well, having the same surname was rather a good indication they were brothers (certainly back in the '70s that was true). All I know is that we kiddies found Ron and his "sideways stare" a constant source of hilarity - but all the while, secretly I was having fantasies about Russell... Jx

Wish I could find that clip

    3. Like I say I didn't realize they were a band in their own right. I knew two people could be a band eg Pet Shop Boys or Erasure but didn't think that was what they were

    4. I had a look on the OU archive site, and there was no mention of it. Jx

    5. Maybe it wasn't OU, but it was shown in bbc2 at some point in that kind of slot

Maybe it was made for PBS in America

  4. I saw them live once... actually I didn't see them, I heard them as it was at a festival somewhere... it might have been Chelmsford in the nineties. I do have a soft spot for them.
Meanwhile, flipping chilly today after all that lush weather. Have a good one!

    1. "Chelmsford in the 90s" might well have been the title of one of their album tracks :-)

Yes, today's weather is really pissing me off. All week in work, I've been gazing at the beautiful warm sunshine out of the office window - but come the weekend, and it's chucking it down (and I have the heating on). Bah!
