Current mood: "Nurse Ratched". RIP, Louise Fletcher.
Yes. It's that time again...
Having woken with a jolt, I see it evidently pissed-down overnight - so all that watering I did yesterday was a little bit futile...
The weekend has yet again flown by, and now it's time to get the galoshes on and head back to the grind. To lift our spirits a little on this Tacky Music Monday, how about a little something from one of the all-time great crooners, who departed for Fabulon @adecadeago today?
Mr Andy Williams (for it was he) was always associated with the "slightly cheesy" end of the spectrum, alongside the likes of Perry Como and Val Doonican, but with the production on this number - ostensibly an ode to "red-blooded heterosexual" desires - he proved to knowingly or unknowingly embrace camp as well..
Have a good week, dear reader.
Loved her in that movie...but Flowers in the Attic she was pretty vile too. RIP!!!! And yes...screw Monday's.
ReplyDeleteI think you're getting her mixed-up with Ellen Burstyn, Mads. Jx
DeletePS Mondays are a bastard!
She was an exceptional actress. I idolized Andy Williams briefly when I was a kid. He was 5’6” and must have hired only short dancers for his show. Turns out he was a rightwingnut who called Obama a Marxist and gave money to assholes like Rush Limbaugh. Glad I got over him long ago.
ReplyDeleteHe had a bizarre track record where politics were concerned - an arch-supporter of the Kennedys who went "loony right" when he got old and bitter; I blame the Presbyterians. Jx
Deletewhen I was a little girl, I was taken/sent to the Presbyterian Sunday School. One branch of the family had embraced the Pope's gang and a cousin (RC) came to stay and brought his friend (also RC). Jack, showing his friend around town, said:"That's the church where Diane goes.Thery're prostiturians." I'm here all week.
Delete"Prostitutarians"? If only they were that "unbuttoned"... Jx
DeleteWhen I think Andy Williams, I think cardigans.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Jx
DeleteI think Canadian Sunset which may be the same thing.
DeleteFor me, Louise Fletcher will always be the contemptible Kai Winn from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. She must have been a phenomenal actress to have played such monsters when she seemed to be such a lovely lady.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of that anecdote about Dustin Hoffman, whose obsession with Lee Strasberg and "The Method" led him to deprive himself of sleep to "get into character" for Marathon Man. When he told Sir Laurence Olivier, the great man simply said: “My dear boy, why don’t you just try acting? It's so much easier.”
DeleteLouise Fletcher could act! Jx
PS a very funny comment from actor Michael Simkins: "... as Ken Dodd might have said, Lee Strasberg never had to play second house at the Glasgow Empire."
hahahaha!
DeleteI had to watch the movie again after hearing of her death. As for Andy Williams, my Mama loved him as a performer, I didn't. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest since (probably) it was first shown on British television..! Jx
DeletePS As I said in the post, Mr Williams really was at the "cheesy" end of the crooner spectrum; either one liked him or hated him. I thought he had a lovely voice. A lot of his material, not so.
Oooo... thank you for the dose of Andy in his Prime. Adore that man. As for Monday. What a TWAT! I've had the most ruinous of days... I must take to my bed at once, never to rise again. Kizzes, dahling.
ReplyDeleteGlad Andy helped! Jx
DeleteI love this tune! My mum wouldn't let me watch the Andy Williams show - I wanted to watch it for the cookie bear.
ReplyDeleteSx
The reference to "the cookie bear" flies right over my head - I didn't even realise that The Andy Williams Show ever made it to British TV, dominated as we were by the likes of Des O'Connor, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Cliff, Lulu, Val, Dame Shirl, Sandie Shaw, Clodagh Rodgers and the rest... Jx
DeleteFab and there is no reason that heterosexuals can't be camp, perhaps the world would be a better place if more were.
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! Jx
