Duck and cover

Time, methinks, for another selection of the "newer" choons that have caught my ear of late...

As is my wont, this collection is again peppered with nostalgia and a few "comebacks" - such as that of the crazy duo who were responsible for that eternal earworm Barbra Streisand.

DUCK!

Then there's the resurgence of a lady who's very close to our hearts, being one of the dance music gay icons of the 1990s [see here and here]...

We turn next to a singer who (to me, at least) actually bears the epithet of "new", the artiste formerly known as Louisa Rose Allen:

...and here's a chap who seems to have been "under the radar" for years as a DJ promoter, but whose penchant for 80s music led him this year to do a (rather good) update of a dearly-loved classic:

Speaking of remixes, I have featured this genius-of-the-mash-up previously, of course [see here, and more recently, here] - but now he's only gone and landed himself an MTV Award; for this slice of brilliance!

Finally... Never mind all that hoo-ha about "the great ABBA comeback". I'm foaming at the gash over the fact that none other than the Vengaboys have returned! [With a cover of a choon by "cool kid" Charli XCX, no less.]

Absolutely fantabulosa!

As always dear reader, let me know what you think...

  1. Well I can tell i love them all....and have used the Duck Sauce song Barbara Streisand many a time in set selections. And always loved the Vengaboys...they are always good for a bop. Just how hot and sexy is member Robin Pors??? He can Venga my boys any day.

  2. What a genius collection, thank you. I especially liked the duck invasion of Los Angeles, but the mashup was the absolute best.

  3. Loved the playlist!
Love mashups too, so yes. Ultra Naté has always been fab. Remember 'If You Could Read My Mind'?
Duck Sauce's Barbara Streisand is a bop.

    XOXO

    1. Thanks, dear.

I bought several of Ms Naté's 90s singles at the time - remember A New Kind of Medicine as well? I also adored the "Stars on 54" collaboration.

Barbra Streisand was fun - but I love Nonchalant (and the video)! Jx

  4. Is that the young Princess Elizabeth scratching? No me gusta the Vengaboys simply because they pronounced Ibiza E bitz'a when it should have been Ibeetha with emphasis on the tha and I didn't like the place much either, had an awful Indian meal in Figueretas.

    1. I was thinking more Katie Boyle, myself...

You have to forgive the Vengaboys' mispronunciation. They're Dutch.

One thing I do know about Spain is to never, ever try and find a decent Indian or Chinese restaurant. We've not found one so far! Stick to Tapas, paella, "British pub" food or steak and chips is my best advice. Jx

I assume you mean "duck and cover"? I have no interest in sport, so wouldn't know its association - for me that phrase refers to that Cold War "what to do in the event of a nuclear strike" public information stuff!

Now that's out of the way - what did you think of the music selection? Jx

    2. um...not my taste. But I like some music that drives others nuts.Imagine if we all voted for Boris or all played brass band and bagpipes.
      Nah...not gonna happen,Lois.

  6. Huh... 1999? I was jogging around L.A. listening to that Madonna album in 1995. Love Duck Sauce and I remember their Bubby Streisand. Ultra Nate was one of my Sunday Divas way back... she recently celebrated a milestone anniversary in the industry (20 years, I think?). And that DJ Cummerbund is one clever clever fox. Also... we do not need anymore covers of You Keep Me Hanging On... though this one is nice. Kizzes.

    1. I know! 1999 doesn't sound that long ago to me, either. We had just moved to London, and living in a tiny bedsit that cost as much to rent as the three-bedroom house we'd left in Plymouth... Jx

  7. I'm a mash-up fan, and this one is fab! Clever.
Hate to admit it, but this awful weather is making me want to take cover with old familiar choons. I think it's called comfort listening.

    1. "Comfort listening" is mainly what we do here at Dolores Delargo Towers - but every now and again, a decent mash-up or "electro" ["It's a modern musical genre, M'Lud."] choon provides a bit of a boost! Jx

  8. "Sister Ray" by Foxes is the clear standout for me with the clever "Shaxicula" coming in second. I loved the video story of "You Keep Me Hangin' On", but not convinced about the update of the song. Still, I liked it better that the rest.

    Thank you DJ Jon!

    1. Being a "child of the '90s" I am surprised you weren't as thrilled as I was to have the Vengaboys back!

Glad you liked some of the "DJ Dolores" selection, anyhow...

    2. Ah, I was never keen on The Vengaboys - but that was probably because one of my friends used to sing (badly) "The Vengabus is coming" nearly EVERY day when we waited for the bus to take us home after college...

  9. A Stonking selection.
I Loved every one and every one has now been added to the 'Dolores Towers' Archive.
