Tragedies, luxuries, statues, parks, galleries

Och Aye! It's Burns Night again - the celebration of Scotland’s national poet, traditionally marked by eating haggis, neeps and tatties washed down with a dram of whisky.

Scotland has produced more than its fair share of internationally-renowned singers, musicians and bands, of course - including Sir Rod Stewart [admittedly, he was actually born in Highgate in London], Gerry Rafferty, Jimmy Somerville, Annie Lennox, Wet Wet Wet, Altered Images, Barbara Dickson, The Proclaimers, Annie Ross, Sheena Easton, Orange Juice, Midge Ure, the Associates, Sharleen Spiteri and Texas, Big Country, Franz Ferdinand, The Waterboys, Strawberry Switchblade, Gallagher and Lyle, Eddi Reader and Fairground Attraction, Kelly Marie, Maggie Bell, Donovan, Lewis Capaldi, Shirley Manson of Garbage, the Bay City Rollers and Lulu...

...but it is to this lot (a fave of mine until they followed U2's lead and went from electronic indie band to stadium rockers) to whom I turn to provide the entertainment, Scottish-style, this year. I used to dance to all of these, way back in the early 80s:

Take care not to hurt yourself doing the Gay Gordons, dear reader!

    1. Sheep’s offal (heart/lung/liver), oats, suet, onion and spices, cooked inside a sheep’s stomach - what's not to like? It is actually very tasty, despite the somewhat off-putting list of ingredients!

Let's face it, people probably eat far worse - but processed to death to make it seem palatable - in McDonalds, KFC, cheap sausages and the like... Jx

  2. That first picture needs to be a Christmas card for only the best of my friends! I like Simple Minds. They've never had a big presence here in the U.S. or at least in my region, but I'm familiar with some of the songs.

My mom had the biggest crush on Rod Stewart back in the day. She had this funny logic though that while she was attracted to blonde men, she was convinced they were all gay. My favorite ex-boyfriend was blonde and when I told her as much she asked, "Is he gay?" and I was like, "Uh no, but his mom is and her partner had the same name as me." LOL

    1. That is probably the root of the old adage "Blondes have more fun"..! Jx

PS It was the classic 1985 film The Breakfast Club that shot Simple Minds to fame in the US, as their Don't You (Forget About Me) was heavily featured, and appeared on the soundtrack LP.

    1. Eddie Monsoon: "Lulu! What would you like, Lulu?"

Lulu: "Three courses and a pudding, and don't talk to me."

Eddie: "Champagne for Lulu! Fantastic, isn't it? Like a reunion.

...You know what you need? You need a really good publicity machine. Who does your PR?"

      Lulu: "You do."
