Happy National Allotments Week!
It's another snippets post, dear reader:
- National treasure in drag news: As if the casting of house fave gayer Olly Alexander, Dinnerladies' Shobna Gulati and the multi-talented TV stalwart Hugh Dennis weren't enough - the latest news from the National Theatre production of The Importance of Being Earnest is that none other than the magnificent Stephen Fry is donning the pince-nez, corset, taffeta and hat to play the redoubtable Lady Bracknell!
- You wouldn't fancy finding it in your bedroom news: A massive sixteen-inch stick insect, previously unknown to science, has been discovered in Australia. {{Shudders}}
- Speaking of "ewww" news: Fancy brushing your teeth with your own hair? Or even something made from it..? Me neither.
- Cheap sparkly accessories fans are bereft news: For the second time in seven years, high street tack emporium Claire's has hit serious financial trouble, and this time, the administrators have been called in. Shame. It was great for a last-minute adornment!
- Tabloid hypocrisy news: It's A-Level exam results day in the UK. Cue the newspapers simultaneously taking the moral high ground on the continuing Epstein scandal, while also featuring slighly dodgy photos of pretty seventeen-year-olds in summer gear leaping into the air outside schools...
- And finally: Today marks FIFTY YEARS since the legendary Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered at the Rialto Theatre [now a casino] in London! It's astounding...
And the weather? A lovely summer's day - a bit of a relief after the latest "mini-heatwave".
When I went to Costa Rica , we saw quite a few big stick bigs there....and some other "alien" like bugs.
ReplyDeleteOn a visit to Egypt, I watched a millipede as long as a TV remote control wend its way under the beer garden table at which I was sat. And let's not even mention the hideous giant cockroaches of Gran Canaria... Jx
DeleteI adore Stephen Fry, hooray! That's a nice picture of an allotment! I hope to have something like it one day! I like stick bugs, its nice that you don't have to worry about them flying at you or running fast, they're just there, hanging out.
ReplyDeleteRocky Horror Picture Show is SO FUN and we need more like it! I say this as a person who typically doesn't care for musicals. My other favorite is the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" musical episode. I even have the soundtrack for it.

I can't wait to see Sir Stephen as Lady Bracknell! We have enough of a job watering and maintaining all the post in our garden without thinking of an allotment as well...
DeleteI never got into "Buffy" - but my sister raves about that musical episode. Jx
Some episodes work great as "stand alones" The musical is one of those episodes and so is the episode "Hush" if you like a bit of horror without gore.
DeleteI might get around to revisiting Buffy sometime. However, it's season 2 of Wednesday that I'm looking forward to! Our friend John-John has suggested a mammoth binge-watch at his place in late Sept/early October. Jx
DeleteSteven Fry as Lady Bracknell is brilliant casting. I would love to see that.
ReplyDeleteUnless you come to London, I doubt you'd have the opportunity, methinks. They may release a filmed version for cinemas or streaming (which the National Theatre has done in the past), of course. Jx
DeleteI wouldn't want to meet that stick insect anywhere!
ReplyDeleteAck, newspapers - I guess they consider 17 year olds legal and therefore up for grabs [literally] - yep, they're hypocritical twats.
Sx
Something that big and spiny - with wings?! No, ta.
DeleteTabloids will forever be a hypocritical bunch of bastards, just to get sales. Jx
Happy National Allotments Week!
ReplyDeleteI would like one, as long as I had a good-looking chap doing the gardening and I could just pop-along for a bit of a jolly.
Of course I would donate the vegetables to the deserving poor.
"Here, have a pumpkin, bumpkin?" Jx
