Illusion never changed into something real
This is a real timeslip moment for me...
Where did the fifteen years go since this beautiful song by the lovely Natalie Imbruglia crashed into the UK charts (only held off the Number 1 slot by the ubiquitous Aqua Barbie Girl)?
Just listening to it sends me right back to my sojourn in Plymouth, Devon's unlovely main city - to different places, different people, different cocks, a different me...
"Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around my eyes, look into my eyes. Three, two, one... You're back in the room."
Torn
I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm
He came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well you couldn't be that man that I adored
You don't seem to know or seem to care what your heart is for
I don't know him anymore
There's nothing where he used to lie
Our conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine
I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn
So I guess the fortune teller's right
I should have seen just what was there and not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins and now
I don't care
I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things that I can't touch
I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn
Torn
There's nothing where he used to lie
My inspiration has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's right
I'm torn.

DeleteNot as I recall... Jx
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the UK Charts there has been a list published of all the songs in those 60 years to have sold a million copies or more - Torn is one of those songs, and among a handful of songs to have sold over a million without getting to number 1.
ReplyDeleteI was planning to blog about the chart on its actual birthday next week. The list of million-sellers is really weird, isn't it? I thought some songs on the list sold much more than they apparently did, there is only one single by Abba and one by Blondie, and conversely there were some real surprises (such as the appearance of Shayne Ward - who? - Eiffel 65 and Bob the Builder...).
