Panic no more

And so farewell then, Clive Dunn aka Corporal Jones - apart from Private Pike (Ian Lavender), the Reverend Timothy Farthing (Frank Williams) and Warden Hodges (Bill Pertwee), the last survivor of the main cast of Dad's Army.

In reality, despite playing the bumbling elderly ex-butcher with his rambling stories of the Boer War and his catchphrase of "Don't Panic!", Mr Dunn was actually decades younger than his compatriots Captain Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe), Sergeant Wilson (John Le Mesurier) and most of the rest. He played up to his fondly imagined dotage away from the programme itself, and even had a Number 1 hit with the godawful song Grandad in 1971.

He died yesterday, aged 92. Here is a brief news report with clips of his finest character in action:

Another chunk of my childhood disappears. RIP.
