Boo! Monday's here!
Groo. Another lovely weekend is over - a visit from The Mother on Saturday (she loved our garden!), and a "chill-out" day gently pottering in the sunshine yesterday - and here we are again...
I think we should go completely OTT this Tacky Music Monday, methinks, by way of a wake-up call - in the glittering company of a cavalcade of stars: Cher, Bette Midler, Dame Elton, and - erm - Flip Wilson!
Have a good one, dear reader.
[I have, of course, featured this clip before, way back in 2014]
A short time later, Bette Midler snarked about the fact that Cher didn’t give her a solo. I loved Flip Wilson but sure don’t get the point of this bit. I wonder what Elton John thinks of this now.
ReplyDeleteDame Elton no doubt adores this clip as much as I do!
DeleteWe in the UK have no idea who Flip Wilson is/was, btw. Jx
Flip Wilson was a stand-up comic and had his own award-winning comedy variety show in the 1970s. He was very funny and had some great musical guests, too. One of his characters was in drag and called Geraldine Jones. She had a boyfriend named Killer. He also did a hilarious routine playing Christopher Columbus talking Isabela into giving him money to discover America. He convinced her by telling her he was going to discover Ray Charles. Check him out on YouTube.
DeleteI have looked him up, of course. I was just remarking that, in common with loads of television stars who were household names in the States in the 1970s and 80s, he never ever appeared in the UK.
DeleteI imagine you would have no clue who the likes of Dick Emery, Les Dawson, Ronnie Corbett or Ronnie Barker were, either. They were all huge primetime telly stars here. Jx
I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in England in the ’70s (my sister lived there), so was familiar with (and loved) British television. That stuck with me. And, fortunately, British TV made it to NYC long before it made its way around much of the States.
DeleteI knew the Yanks took to Benny Hill (and later Mr Bean), and that many hit comedy series over there were actually remakes of classic comedy series from the UK (Three's Company, Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Dear John and so forth), but I would never have thought the likes of The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen at Large, Mike Yarwood, Les Dawson or even Morecambe & Wise would translate, really. Jx
DeleteThat gif is from one of my favorite films of all time. The House On Haunted Hill. I adore that movie. The blonde... Carol Ohmart. Man, she stole every scene she was in. No one ever looked better in a cone bra. Kizzes.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mr King, for the info! I'll never be able to disassociate "random horror film gif" from "cone bra" henceforth... Jx
DeleteIt rained a lot in Devon at the weekend - I should have taken photos of the puddles to prove it - even the Devon weather man is denying that it rained.
ReplyDeleteApologies, I have swerved completely off topic - but I hope you are having a good week!
Sx
It's been a grey, depressing day in London - no rain, just murk. Yuk. Hey ho. British summer's over. We should be used to it by now... Jx
