High on believin'

[click to embiggen]

Oh wow! As we wallow in the ongoing heatwave across the UK (temperatures are due to hit 87F/31C today - and 97F/36C tomorrow and Tuesday!), there is even more reason to celebrate - for none other than the uber-talented David Hasselhoff is 70 years old today.

All hail The Hoff! - the man who (according to him, anyhow) played a major part in the fall of the Berlin Wall, and whose career surpassed Baywatch and Knight Rider to reach the dizzying heights of cinematic glory with the likes of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Ted 2, Kickin' It Old Skool and Piranha 3DD...

...and this masterpiece!

Many happy returns, David Michael Hasselhoff (born 17th July 1952)

  1. Blech! However, when I tell people here to just call me Mitch, they often say “Oh like Mitch Buchanan!”

    1. I never watched Baywatch, so I wouldn't even have known that was The Hoff's character's name...

However, I always have a soft spot for anyone who can take the piss out of himself for as long as he has, and still keep going. He's a panto and West End regular over here in the UK, his reality TV show was a flop in the UK but a success here, he had his own sitcom in 2015 on the UKTV cable channel Dave, and there was even a viral campaign in 2006 to get his single Get In My Car to #1 in the charts (he made Number 3, which is a pretty good effort!), so his "cult" obviously has many British supporters. 1. I looked that up - it was a made-for-TV movie called The Cartier Affair, in which The Hoff plays an ex-con pretending to be gay to get a job as secretary to Joan Collins so he can steal her jewels, but ends up shagging her instead. I think it was meant to be a comedy. I shan't be rushing to Oxfam to try and find that one. If it ever made it to DVD. Jx

  4. I'm the same as Mitzi, The Hoff passed me by - I remain unscathed, I don't even remember him in a film starring Joanie.

    1. It was "made for TV", which means "straight to VHS" over here. Jx

  5. That would explain a line in a song of the music hall singer Fréhel - Tel Qu'il Est (it's on Youtube). It's one of those "My man is so ugly/wonky/dim - but I love him anyway" songs:

"Il n'a pas un seul poil sur la tête
Mais il en a plein sur ses gambettes
Et celui qu'il a dans la main
C'est pas du poil, c'est du crin"

He hasn't a hair on his head
    But plenty on his pins,
And the one he has in his hand,
    That's not a hair - it's a mane

I thought it meant just another physical defect, but clearly it means he's really really lazy
