We know when to kiss and we know when to kill

Heavens! Possibly one of Britain's greatest exports, James Bond is 60 today! [Well, the film franchise is, anyhow...]

Any excuse, methinks, to indulge ourselves in the greatness of some of my favourite Bond themes over the last six decades!

Oh, I needed that wallow...

Read Peter Bradshaw on Bond at 60, in The Guardian

  1. Hmm. These days? Bond leaves me cold. I remember seeing The Spy Who Loved Me in the theatre. I went for the theme song. In fact, that's the only thing about the movies I have ever enjoyed - the theme songs. Love Duran Duran. They killed it. Thanks for sharing. I always thought that Gladys Knight's theme never got the attention it was due.

    1. I don't think I have seen a Bond film since the Timothy Dalton era, so I can't comment on the more "recent" crop, but the classic ones with Mr Connery and Mr Moore were always cracking entertainment - and became quite a "telly ritual" at Xmas...

It is true that the themes alone made the whole film series even more of a "draw", yet even those - with the notable exception of Adele - went downhill after The World Is Not Enough. Jx

  2. Some great songs there but nothing beats Dame Shirley of Bassey.

  3. As your aware....I worship Dame Shirley Bassey....by far the best swanky sound to a Bond theme. I m also fond of Tina Turner singing Golden Eye.

    1. Without Dame Shirl, I doubt the Bond films would have become anywhere near as successful. Yes, Tina's was another good one, but didn't make the list of my faves. Nor did Sheena Easton, Aha or Carly Simon, and I love those too. Jx

  4. I love the Garbage theme, and listen to it often. I liked Daniel Craig as Bond - actually not so keen on the older Connery/Moore films - I think I found them boring when I was growing up, and they still don't appeal, but I love many of the themes.

    1. Roger Moore's run was very funny in places. I always liked him as an actor. Jx

    2. With you on this. The early ones were more subtle than the later ones. But Connery and Moore were brilliant.

  5. Ooh, I love "Moonraker" and "Licence to Kill"!
I think I saw Licence to Kill at the cinema (underage), but for me, Bonds were best as Bank Holiday fare starring Sean Connery or Roger Moore (Pierce Brosnan at a push, but only because he's so handsome). The Daniel Craig ones are far too serious and miserable.

    1. There was always a Bond film on on a Bank Holiday weekend, and at Xmas, along with the likes of the Wizard of Oz, The Great Escape and The Sound of Music. Not sure what's on telly nowadays - haven't bought the big "double-issues" of Radio Times or TV Times (and marked them with circles and asterisks for the programmes I want to watch; which was the ritual when we were kids) in decades! Jx

PS "Pierce Brosnan at a push". Now there's a thought...
