The original Broadway version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific premiered 75 years ago this year [in February, to be precise]. The stud-muffin-filled movie adaptation was released nine years later - and is still hot!
How I remember those studly sailors from the first time I saw them... and the second... third... twelfth. Ooh baby. I can’t believe the censors let Stew Pot display that.
You may remember that in this scene on the beach there is a makeshift shower apparatus with a sign reading "Look but don't touch!" Hmmm, perhaps an early version of "don't ask don't tell"? With Stewpot and Ed Fury lurking about there's no telling what might happen.
I've always thought the line "There ain’t a thing that’s wrong with any man here, that can’t be cured... to be packed with double-meaning! They knew what they were writing about. Jx
I loved this movie when I was a youngling for obvious reasons and still do. Had a crush on John Kerr who played Lt. Joseph Cable and still think Giorgio Tozzi (who dubbed the singing for Rossano Brazzi) is the best version of the wonderfully romantic 'Some Enchanted Evening'.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind a mouthful of his stew! Jx
DeleteWell, I guess we know who was the bottom!
ReplyDeleteAll of 'em, given enough rum rations... Jx
DeleteSouth Pacific? I was wondering when the bang would take place.

When it came out...ooh! I should say "released" ...my hockey captain was called Lola. You can guess what our cheer song was.

DeleteCould do with a bit of South Pacific around these draughty parts.
ReplyDeleteSx
Blustery here, too - but very mild! Jx
DeletePS I wouldn't mind one or two of those "sailors" round my parts
Hmmm... The lifeboat crew and odd crab fisherman around here aren't quite the same thing, mores the pity.
ReplyDeleteSome men should bare their oiled chests, and some should stay in a sou'wester, buttoned to the neck... Jx
