Keep on cruisin', let's have the music!

You know you're getting (very) old when you discover that...

...70s pop idol, 80s cosy sitcom fave, and theatrical treasure Mr Paul Nicholas is 80 today!

Here are just two of the massive chart hits that made him a household name in the UK:

Oh dear. I remember it all too well...

Many happy returns, Paul Nicholas (born Paul Oscar Beuselinck, 3rd December 1944)!

  1. That’s the first time I’ve seen anyone do the bump to Dancin’ with the Captain. And he was impressive. He could dance and hold a dead microphone while lip-syncing. That’s a lot to keep track of. Anyway, this is my introduction to Paul Nicholas. What a varied career he’s had.

    1. Mr Nicholas - probably because his pop persona was so unashamedly naff, and he stuck so steadfastly to a "light entertainment" career for so many years - was rather underrated as an all-round entertainer. He was one of the original cast of Hair in the West End in 1968, the star of the first staged version of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972, and again in the premiere of Cats in 1981, and has been a stalwart of the stage ever since. He's on stage in London as we speak, as "The Major" in the adaptation of Fawlty Towers... Jx

    2. As a result of your post, I read up on him. I learn a lot from you as a result. Yes, an exceptional career.

    3. Shame he's not better known outside the UK - a true talent. Jx

  2. No! He was fab in Eastenders as well! He was Sharon's real father, and a proper villain. Not that any of that will mean anything to you, nor will you care!!

    1. Also, my boyfriend, back in the day, was a huge fan of Just Good Friends. I always thought he was marketed as another David Essex - I don't know why!

    2. You are correct where EastEnders is concerned - I can't remember when I last watched a whole episode. Probably around the time that the gorgeous "Joe" (Paul Nicholls) was going mad and stripping off a lot. That was in 1996!

I hated Just Good Friends, but I do remember him being pitched as a rival to David Essex - both very cute, but Mr Essex had much more "animal magnetism", in my opinion. Jx
