A man who thinks his flat cap makes him resemble a stylish 1920s gangster actually resembles an elderly Yorkshireman in a gentle comedy, according to friends. The Daily Mash
Stephen Malley claims to be only wearing the hat to keep his head warm, even though it rests lightly on top of his hair and does not cover his ears.
Friend Martin Bishop said: “Thing is, when Cillian Murphy’s in that hat, he exudes sexy menace like he’s about to smash someone’s face in on a door.
“When Stephen wears it, he looks more like a pensioner from the Dales. The curmudgeonly one played by Brian Wilde, not the nice, gentle one played by Peter Sallis.
“I’d tell him, but then he might go back to wearing the pork pie hat he thought made him look like Mark from Take That.”
Of course.
And just for the sake of it...

I adore you!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know I love that show. This week a marathon has started and their airing the whole series. Right now, were into season 6. I may make the beach by August if I'm lucky.
Series SIX? Good heavens - that was 38 years ago! If you sit in and watch every episode to the final end of its run (in 2010), you will probably not see daylight for a few summers yet... Jx
DeleteLoved the early series but got got a bit too silly towards the end.
ReplyDeleteThe theme is delightful though.
It became a parody of a parody by the end, I agree. Jx
DeleteI've got them all on DVD. Getting Sam Home being a particular favourite episode of mine with the wonderful Lily Bless Her, that was! Been to Holmfirth many times when they were filming it, stood on a bridge overlooking Nora Batty's house, she had a big booming voice. Loved it, but not the Russ Abbot years too daft.
ReplyDeleteOh, "Lily Bless Her" - Lynda Baron: one of my fave character actresses! Her Nurse Gladys Emmanuel was one of the best things about Open All Hours, and she absolutely nailed it with her portrayal of Violet Carson in The Road to Coronation Street (alongside Jessie Wallace as Pat Phoenix and Celia Imrie as Doris Speed)... We saw her on stage in the West End with Maureen Lipman and Roy Hudd in a West End production of When We Are Married by J.B. Priestley, and she was fab.
