Dusty going nowhere
Dusty Springfield would have been 81 today. In recognition, here's her splendid version of a most appropriate Martha And The Vandellas song for the current "self-isolation society"...
Dusty Springfield OBE (born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, 16th April 1939 – 2nd March 1999).
We still miss you.

Nothing wrong with a bit of dust.
ReplyDeleteWe love her. Jx
DeleteI love her! And that footwork. I wonder why she went by "Dusty Springfield." Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien is so catchy.
ReplyDeleteIf one happens to be a saint. Jx
DeleteAccording to her cousin it's because she used to get dirty playing football at school. Don't know where she got Springfield though she was in a band called the Springfields to begin with.
ReplyDeleteShe is so gorgeous and I love her voice.
She and her brother renamed themselves Dusty and Tom Springfield when they joined the Springfields, founded by a chap called Tim Field. And yes, I heard that "Dusty" was supposedly a nick-name she had from playing street football, but there were a few "Sandys" around at the time, so it may have just been a pun. She apparently modelled her "look" on drag queens, as she had a perpetual insecurity about looking too "mannish". Jx
DeletePS We used to live in a bedsit in Ealing that overlooked the gardens of the convent school that Mary/Dusty attended as a child and first learned to sing...
I hope there's a blue plaque at the very least.
ReplyDeleteI must admit, I never checked... Jx
