What's she going to look like..?

Sigh. Back to work.

As we're now in the month of May - the month Madam Arcati and I first got together twenty-five years ago, we're off in the TARDIS to get the gen on what was happening at the time...

In the news headlines in May 1998: footballer Justin Fashanu, being pursued by US police over an allegation of sexual assault against a seventeen-year-old male, committed suicide in London; the UK hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham, which was won by Israel's Dana International (the contest's first trans winner); two nurses who had been convicted in Saudi Arabia for the murder of colleague Yvonne Gilford the previous year had their sentences commuted by the order of King Fahd; Kevin Lloyd ("Tosh Lines" in The Bill) was sacked over his alcoholism, and died days later; referendums on the Good Friday Agreement were held in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with 95% and 71% support respectively; and the world mourned the death of the iconic Frank Sinatra.

In our cinemas: Sliding Doors; Scream 2; The Big Lebowski. On telly: Dawson's Creek; Open House with Gloria Hunniford; the 200th episode of The Simpsons.

And what of the charts this week a quarter of a century ago? That dreariest of boybands Boyzone had just toppled It's Like That by Run-D.M.C. vs Jason Nevins from the top slot. Also present and correct were Kula Shaker, Catatonia, Steps, Savage Garden, the Mavericks, and - ahem - Busta Rhymes; and Slime Dion was still lurking around despite every effort to sterilise the joint. But rocketing into the Top Five was another of my most beloved choons (and quite the earworm)...

...and by way of an extra - here's the (very camp) original upon which Tamperer's mega-hit was based:

Ah, memories...

    1. I haven't watched The Simpsons in decades. Is it still funny? I heard South Park "lost its way" a while back. Jx

  3. Happy quarter of a century! I like to tune in to Rip Off Britain just to see what sort of hideous necklace Gloria is wearing.

    1. Miss Hunniford's always had a penchant for chunky neckwear. Not our greatest style icon. Jx

  4. Happy 25 years together! Isn't it strange when you've been together with someone for a long time and then look back on pictures of when you were first dating? I find it all a bit surreal. I hope you have many more happy years together!

    1. Old photos can be terrifying! "Just who are those two skinny whelps without any grey hair? Not us, surely?!"

      Time's a terrible thing... Jx

  5. Happy 25th!
Funny, I was looking at old photos - shocking - all the different hair-dos, some of which made me look like I was auditioning for Dynasty.
    Love this Tamperer tune.

    1. We've often joked we should try and create a flip-book of our holiday snaps from Benalmadena - where we have been going to the same beach bar for eighteen years since it opened, and have many photos of us sitting at the same table - that would provide a sort-of-time-lapse slideshow from thin and dark-haired to old, fat and grey 😁 Jx

and yes we have gone from thin and dark-haired to old, fat and grey.
So what! It's been a ball ( well most of it )
Here's to being old, fat and grey together ( preferably on the beach in Spain)

  7. I can't believe "Feel It" is from 1998! It feels like only a few years ago that I was dancing to it in Norwich's hot, sticky, and small gay club. Where has the time gone??

    Happy 25th!

    1. It's the eternal question, indeed - how could time fly so bloody quickly?!

I mean... Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams' Get Lucky was ten years ago, and Sugababes Hole In the Head was released two decades hence. Gulp. Jx
