She's practically perfect, in every way!
Yes, the venerable and venerated Dame Julie Andrews blows out 90 candles on her cake today, and the tributes are rolling in - not least this amusing one in The Guardian. Who knew she used to drive around Los Angeles with a “Mary Poppins Was a Junkie” bumper sticker on her car?!
But I digress... On with the show!
Many, many happy returns, Dame Julie Elizabeth Andrews, DBE (born 1st October 1935)
She should have been Eliza in the movie. I love Audrey Hepburn, but come on!
ReplyDeleteAudrey was good in the part, but just about everyone said Julie wuz robbed! Still, she got her own back with the success of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music! Jx
Delete90!!!!! Sweet Charity. That picture of her in the dark red ensemble is one of my favorites of her.
ReplyDeleteShe really looked wonderful in Star. The costumes by Donald Brooks were sublime, the sets and set-pieces were remarkable - it's such a shame the film itself was so dreadful... Jx
DeleteJulie was an important part of my childhood. First, we saw Mary Poppins and my sisters and I sang the songs on repeat. Then came the big movie event with The Sound of Music. On a Sunday afternoon we all got dressed up. Daddy usually didn't go to movies, but he went to this one, wearing a suit. Mother and all of us girls wore our best dresses. It was wonderful. Finally, I knew Julie was on Broadway in Victor/Victoria. The X man and our 2 children and I had second row seats. It was heaven. Julie was so beautiful. She's still beautiful at 90 and will always be beautiful to me.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Happy memories - and Dame Julie was there for all of them! A treasure, indeed. Jx
DeleteDidn't she get her knockers out in 10?
ReplyDeleteThat was S.O.B. - a film I never saw. Thankfully. Jx
DeleteWonderful in My Fair Lady.
ReplyDeleteWonderful in everything! Jx
DeleteHappy Birthday Dame Julie.
ReplyDeleteThere was never anyone like her. there is no one like her now and there will never be anyone like her.
She is practically perfect, in every way!
