Not going left - not going right

Having sidestepped it steadfastly so far by clicking "revert" to access the more familiar blog editor, today it seems the "new Blogger interface" is unavoidable, and the option to use the "legacy" system has gone. Shame - I do resent being forced to change for change's sake, but I suppose I'll just have to "put up and shut up". Who am I kidding? It is clunkier than the old system, especially the HTML editor, some things are not working (the list of previous "labels" appears to be missing, for example) and looks downright ugly. All that orange...

It's endemic these days for companies to tinker around with their sites just to appease people who do everything on their phone, rather than on a PC as I do (I reverted back to a simple Nokia from a "smart" phone years ago). Sod the rest of us.

Rant over, and on with the show.

Today would have been the 95th birthday of the wondrous Miss Dorothy Loudon, so let's let her sum up the mood with the help of Mr Sondheim...

 Fantabulosa!

STOP PRESS:

3.10pm - I have been informed in the Help Forum that if one has more than 5000 labels on one's blog, then when creating a new post no drop-down list of labels will appear, so one has to type them in manually. It also took TWO HOURS after publishing for this post to appear in the Reading List. Shoddy.

    1. I am going to persist, despite it all. It's not as if this site hasn't had technical meltdowns before, over the years I have been using it. Jx

    2. Already the redirects notice from dashboard is a pain....and a video I just posted looks funny. A simple post took me 40 mins. I need a gin.

    3. I've reported the link redirects issue via the feedback thing (the question mark "?") at the top of the dashboard.

Videos - I use a fab piece of HTML code so I don't embed the video itself in my posts, just an image of it which people click on to get to the YouTube video. It's here. Jx

  2. I post using a laptop and I dreaded the loss of "legacy blogger" too. The good news: while the new format is not an improvement by ANY stretch it does become more intuitive the more you use it. Persevere!

  3. Sorry the new interface (as a cyber dummy I feel a fraud even using the term) is so clunky, but just a note to say somebody on the other side of the pond appreciates your efforts daily! All best, xoN

  4. We all feel like 'victims' of online technology changes these days. Thank you for putting in the hours to bring us such entertainment and enjoyment!

  5. Ug. Mine, too. I've been hoping that enough people submitted less than favourable feedback for the new interface so that the Legacy version would remain as a revert option. Sadly not. (I've been sending constructive criticism for the past week or so - and one or two not so constructive, plus an ALL CAPS RANT)
Still, as you say, "I am going to persist."

    1. I've been posting rant after rant today via both the "Feedback" thingy AND the supposed help forum "Blogger Community". They're sick of me already. GOOD.

The more CAPS the better, it seems. Jx

    2. PS If you're happy to share the rants you've been having, I will gladly add "grist to the mill" by posting similar (if I haven't already, of course). I have complained about formatting, layout, time-lapse between publication and posting, the fact they (for some reason changed my blog's time zone, the stupid redirect notice on clicking links, the limit on the numbers of blog "labels", the fact that if I release a comment from "awaiting moderation" I don't then get a notification email as I used to, the size of text, the compression of thumbnail pictures in the Reading List to a "distorted square", and I haven't finished yet! 6. I am coming to the conclusion that technology companies are run by adult-children who received one too many certificates for showing up. The newsest Apple update, iOS14? Developers were given one day to make it perfect and then BOOM, it was released earlier this week. Facebook has dumps a MISERABLE desktop update that makes the site dreadfully unresponsive. They have no idea what they are doing - these changes are made for end users, they are made for other children until the next best thing takes over.

    1. Many moons ago, my job was to create an intranet designed for use by approximately 10,000 staff of varying degrees of "tech competency". In those days, the maxims of "usability" [as espoused by the "guru" Jacob Nielsen] and "user acceptance" were key - in other words, NEVER alienate the audience you are meant to serve; those who will actually be using your site. All that seems to have gone out of the window nowadays, and, as I said in my post, only those people who "swipe" past everything on their way to something else on a mobile phone seem to matter any more. In other words, if it fits a tiny 2in by 5in screen that is all that they care about, never mind what we creative bloggers want to do with it. Jx

      Children, indeed. Jx

  8. We had all this with WordPress last year, but thankfully they have kept the classic editor going. I feel your pain. I’d better have a look at blogger to make sure I still understand it.

    1. It's not difficult to understand, just frustrating to use. There are so many things that used to be straightforward which have become awkward and clunky - a retrograde step, as so many "improvements" are, in my experience. Jx
