Totty of the Day

And so, farewell, then Mr Ryan O'Neal - star of one of my all-time fave films What's Up Doc? (and one of my most loathed, Love Story), dad to Tatum (with whom he co-starred in Paper Moon), and one half of one of the most tumultuous relationships since the Taylor-Burtons, with Farrah Fawcett.

His career never really went anywhere; his domestic life and family bust-ups made more column inches than his movies - but we still have that smile to look back on...

RIP, Ryan O'Neal (20th April 1941 – 8th December 2023)

  1. So glad I'm not alone in my feelings about Love Story. The film made me absolutely insane.

    1. Ali McGraw was so bad in it, I was willing her to die. Jx

    2. I don't know why but I've always wanted to like Ali McGraw... However, some of her acting turns have been god-awful.

    3. She falls into a "certain category" of actresses who are like nails on a blackboard to me - like Mia Farrow, Jacqueline Bisset and Susannah York, whose presence in a film immediately spoils it for me (although Miss York was in The Killing of Sister George, which is a fantastic movie, despite her). 1. Oh, What's Up Doc|? still makes me laugh, even now - Madeline Kahn was superb, and it remains one of MegaBabs' finest screen moments! Jx

  3. Ah, he did look cute in his pyjamas in What's Up Doc? - love that film! Other than that, I don't remember Mr O'Neal in anything else except for Bones (although I've just looked at his wiki page and discovered that I must have seen him in Chances Are and Desperate Housewives).

    1. As I said, after his initial superstardom in the 1970s, his career went downhill and was very patchy. Jx

    2. Wasn't he a teenage boyfriend of Mia Farrow in tv "Peyton Place"? Or am I confused.Again!

    3. I was too young to ever watch Peyton Place (although I think my mother was probably a fan) - but I believe that both Mia Farrow and Ali McGraw were in it. Jx

  5. Warren Beatty - “You're So Vain."
But if I looked like him then I think I would be too and spend all day looking at myself in the mirror.
He was good looking and charming who cares about acting.
    RIP
