Bang, bang, bang

It's a sunny, blustery, chilly autumnal day here in London - a bit of a change, after a burst of "Indian Summer" temperatures on Friday, and a mild (if showery) day yesterday - and Madam Arcati and I are off to the cinema to wallow in sumptuous grandeur courtesy of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale this afternoon.

Meanwhile, I think a collection of some of the "newer" choons that have caught my ear of late is in order:

First up - the ever-wonderful Mael brothers show absolutely no sign of stopping their consistently brilliant musical output [fifty-one years' worth and counting!] - and their new one (featuring performer Self-Esteem, in the video at least) is as superb as ever:

Cranking the party up a notch, a couple of bangers - starting with a bit of a kinky one...

...followed by the return of an old club fave:

How about a mash-up? Yes please! Metallica never sounded so good:

Here's what happens when two fave bands collide:

And, finally, the current house faves de jour!

As ever dear reader, I'd love to know your thoughts...

  1. Ooh, another eclectic selection!
I don't really know what to say about "Porcupine" - I didn't dislike it, but it's not for me. Similarly, I think I need to be off my tits to fully appreciate Die Sexual and ARTBAT & Benny Benassi.
Love the Bill McClintock mashup, though! And I can't decide which of "Brand New Me" or "Freaks" is my favourite (Saint Etienne x Confidence Man's video is fun!).

  2. Porcupine: I like their shirts.
Desire: I’d need to be tripping.
    Feel the Bass: Just, no.
For You and I the Crazy Baby Tolls: I agree. Metallica never sounded so good.
Brand New Me: Sorry. It’s not a brand new me.
Freaks: Entertaining. And I love freaks in my neighborhood.

    1. I think we're all agreed - strong drugs are probably needed to get in the mood for "club bangers" these days. Like Ramipril. And Omeprazole.

The marvellous Bill McClintock makes all heavy metal music that bit better... And freaks are always welcome here! Jx

  3. I loved all of them, except for the Ozzy Ozborne and company jig. And Im a long fan of Saint Ettienne.

    1. Ozzy's much improved by the addition of Rick James, however... St Etienne are certainly going out with a bang - every track I've heard from their final album is a winner! Jx

  4. Saint Eteinne x Confidence Man reminds me of the Saturday morning line up of kids cartoons and shows in the 1960’s and 1970’s. We even had the Thunderbirds and the Double Deckers from the UK. :)
Summer in California is coming to a close, and even our deserts get cold, rain and flash floods. Even Death Valley can get freezing temps and snow !

    1. You got The Double Deckers in America?!! Heavens. How did you cope..?

Yes, the Saint Eteinne x Confidence Man animation does indeed take me right back to the likes of Josie and the Pussycats and such bizarre Saturday morning cartoons when I was growing up... Jx

  5. Yay, I hope you both enjoy the last installment of Downton Abby! We haven't seen it yet, but looking forward to it. I have to be quiet right now, so no blasting of the choons at the moment, but I'll try to come back for listen. Color me intrigued by such an eclectic mix! I'm always a fan of dangerously sexy music when it can be pulled off right.

    1. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was everything one could ever want, to be honest! Loads of soap-opera melodrama, exposition and corniness, balanced with gloriously opulent costumes and settings, top-notch character acting, laughter and tears - a fitting ending to one of the best on-screen entertainments of the century. You'll love it! Jx

  6. I came back to hear the music. It's a shame we can't go clubbing together it would be fun! I could definitely more to this! Funny thing about Die Sexual, is it an old video? Because we haven't worn mesh shirts like that around here since circa 1995. I could not watch the video of Porcupine for long because too much camera movement makes me nauseous, but otherwise I like it. I liked the Metallica et all. mashup well enough but it certainly was surreal! I had no idea.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the selection, Melanie! Heaven only knows what Die Sexual's all about; it's all very "Frankie Goes To Hollywood". McClintock mash-ups are always a treat! Jx

  7. I really liked the Freaks video, if just for the title alone.
