Everyone in the universe is more than familiar with the vocal talents of Frank Sinatra, whose 105th anniversary it is today. However, another superb vocalist was also born on this date, yet is all but forgotten in the "Great American Songbook Hall of Fame" - Mr Joe Williams.
A Big Band singer from the 1930s, his talents were well sought-after by all the greats such as Coleman Hawkins, Red Saunders and Lionel Hampton, and he was a long-term collaborator with the Count Basie Orchestra - and was still performing almost till his death in 1999, at the age of 80.
By way of a tribute, here is the great man, singing one of his signature numbers to an appreciative audience that included Ol' Blue Eyes himself, back in 1990...
Now, that's class...
Joe Williams (born Joseph Goreed, 12th December 1918 – 29th March 1999)
