RIP, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, Baron Greenwich, Royal Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Extra Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Member of the Order of Merit, Grand Master and First and Principal Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Knight of the Order of Australia, Additional Member of the Order of New Zealand, Extra Companion of the Queen’s Service Order, Royal Chief of the Order of Logohu, Extraordinary Companion of the Order of Canada, Extraordinary Commander of the Order of Military Merit, Lord of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, Privy Councillor of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty, Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom.
Oh, sorry for your loss. This was a bit expected. He served nobly. Quiet strength.
ReplyDeleteHe was 99. A "good innings", as they say. One can only sympathise with HM The Queen, who was married to him for 73 years... Jx
DeleteNice to see he didn't have many titles.
ReplyDeleteThe last couple years it was hard to see him.
I didn't even know Merioneth had an Earldom...
DeleteHe did retire from public life at the age of 96, and apart from crashing his car, he wasn't around a much. I would rather hope not to be still working at that age, either! [Not that I am likely to reach such a venerable age.] Jx
This news rather knocked me for six earlier on - I had an absolutely useless afternoon "at" work because of it. Poor Liz - I hope she'll be okay and that this isn't the beginning of the end.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Prince Philip was quite the looker in his youth, wasn't he!
Even though he was so old, and everyone's been expecting it for years, the news did hit a bit hard.
DeleteHe was an absolute stunner - no wonder HMQ went loopy for him as a teenager. I would have, too! Jx
My condolences to his family and the people that loved him. It's hard to let go at any age.
ReplyDeleteHe's going to be quite a loss. Jx
DeleteHis pain is over, but I do feel for the Queen. And, no, I'm not going to tell scurrilous stories and coarse jokes.
ReplyDeleteVale, Phillip.
Why not? "Phil the Greek" told plenty of scurrilous stories and rude jokes over the years, no doubt!
DeleteHe'd likely be amazed at the way the country - and in particular the media - has reacted. The BBC in particular cancelled all its scheduled programmes yesterday (and Radio 1 and Radio 2, having aligned themselves yesterday along with every other channel to Radio 4's news output, are still today just confined to playlists of "appropriate music" without any of the normal array of "jolly" presenters), and even the commercial channels gave over huge chunks of their schedule to cover his life and legacy, ad infinitum.
I can hear that trademark throaty baritone chuckle echoing through the ether as we speak... Jx
The BBC even took CBBC off air. Crikey.

Not being the sort who watches kids' telly at my venerable age, I didn't notice... Jx
DeleteI read about it! If I was 7, I would have howled the house down.

When I was 7, we had about two hours of children's TV and had to lump it. Once the evening news was on, it was all for the grownups and more or less bedtime! Jx
