Sursedey chnam thmey!

I coud do with a tasty Thai dish right now...

It's lovely and sunny today, but nothing tropical.

It is, however, New Year in South-East Asia! Apparently, the historical Hindu calendar is based upon the movement of the sun in relation to the stars rather than (like ours in the West) the length of day, so their new year starts with the sun's entry into the constellation of Aries, and festivities known as Mesha Sankranti and Songkran are celebrated across the region - in Nepal, parts of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China, and in Burma/Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.

So let's don our fancy gold hats and practice those pointy-dance moves and get moving! Strike a pose; there's nothing to it...

I need a lie down now.

  1. I miss spicy, fresh, exotic food. That has been the one thing about the pandemic that I miss the most. Well, one of the things. There is that one thing... sigh. But back to food.. The Asian food I can order in is crap. I have been reduced to ordering from their special diet section because of their crappy sauces and suspicious ingredients. The most exotic thing I have eaten this year has been steamed veggies with bean curd with a side of garlic sauce. Sigh. As much as I love all the Asian varieties, I really, really miss Middle Eastern Food. Those spices. I try the bottled sauces... meh. And no, Helen, you don't want me making up stuff in the kitchen, trust me. Thanks for this. But now... I'm really hungry. (On so many levels).

    1. Some Apsara dancing in a big pointy gold hat should take your mind off such things!

I'm fortunate, indeed, that the Madam is a chef (in possession of 180 cookbooks). He can turn his hand to Chinese, Indian, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Spanish, French or Italian cuisine; whatever takes his fancy. So we eat well without resorting to dodgy takeaways or nasty cook-in sauces... Jx

  2. Everything about this post is delish! Gotta agree with Uptonking, though. I miss going out for quality Thai food. The Biker has a couple of go-to's, but when you need Swimming Rama and Tom Yum, you gotta have 'em!

    1. Just looked up both dishes, and my mouth is watering..! Truth be told, we rarely eat Thai food. Here, in comparison to either Indian or Chinese, the portions are small - and much of what passes for "Thai" mainly revolves around coconut-based dishes. I hate coconut. Jx

  3. Oh, well, happy new year! I think it makes much more sense to start the year in Spring rather than in the depths of Winter. Although, with the temperatures as they are now, perhaps we might celebrate the new year in June?

    1. It has gone rather nippy here, too - but this morning was beautiful and sunny, so that made all the difference.

If the god-botherers hadn't co-opted Eostre for their nailed-to-the-cross pageant of woe, we would still have had a massive Spring festival involving bunnies, eggs, flowers and CAKE!

  4. Being on the West Coast of the US we get a lot of terrific Asian food from across the great blue pond of the Pacific. I do miss my favorite Thai food place though because it's too far away to get a to-go order from. I hope the people that live closer were able to keep it afloat so that we might return when indoor seating will be allowed and we are vaccinated.

I had a Vietnamese work-study student once who was confused as to why the computer had no storage space left. When I looked, I discovered that she had downloaded 87 Vietnamese pop songs! Ha,ha,ha. I told her she could only keep 5 and that was being generous. It was an old computer and she only worked 4 hours a week.

    1. I look forward to eating the delicious food from the Chinese, Indian and Moroccan restaurants near my office - they are similarly just too far away from where we live to order takeaway delivery... Jx

  5. I agree with Mr Devine for having New Year in Spring.
I remember eating Thai food at the Blue Elephant in Fulham - it was wasted on me then, I think I'd appreciate it now!

    1. Not being that familiar with the area, I looked up the Blue Elephant - it moved to Imperial Wharf in 2012. We have nothing like it near here. The giant restaurants are all Turkish in our area. Jx

  6. Oh I did enjoy singing along to that.
    All together now -
