Tubers, black holes and Itt

If any flower screams "Spring", it's the wallflower...

It's been absolutely beautiful today, and I have made the most of it in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers, potting-up our fabulous Dahlia "Bishop's Children" into a trough and a big pot. We've had them for several years now, and every year there are more and more tubers to store over the winter - and they require bigger and bigger pots each summer. However, they repay all the effort in spades; they will be in flower from around the middle of May till the frosts of October/November!

Here's a jolly little choon to accompany proceedings:

RIP, Cousin Itt...

  1. How sad about Felix. Such an iconic role. Interesting take on that tune by Anka. Good for him. We all need to stretch out. And you... putting the rest of us to shame... (well, not Miss Maddie, of course). Good for you. I keep walking the ground of the boyfriend's house plotting my attack. But that's about all I'm doing right now. It's not warm enough for me. Kizzes.

    1. There's always something to do in the garden, no matter whether it's chilly. Here, I feel we've turned the corner into Spring proper, so it's obviously the busiest time of all! Jx

PS Maddie doesn't know the meaning of the word "shame"...

  2. Thanks for the news about Felix Silla. I had no idea that he'd played so many roles.

  3. That first picture is so pretty! You don't have to worry about squirrels getting in your tubers? The entirety of my gardening existence is just a serious of mini boss battles.

I wonder if Cousin It is related to our dear pacific coast Sasquatch.

    1. Grey squirrels here don't seem to have a penchant for Dahlias, but they do dig into every pot to bury nuts - that's why each pot or trough now has a healthy layer of gravel over the top of it. Jx

  4. The wallflowers are particularly good this year and smell divine
the week-end is set to be fair so we should be able to sit and enjoy them perhaps with a bit of Paul Anka and his ilk swinging along in the background.

  5. It's about time we had a sunny (if not overly warm) weekend to get out and get things done. Like you, I've been out in the garden most of this weekend, too.

  6. I adore wallflowers!
And about that dahlia...is it a scion of "Bishop of Llandaff"?

    1. Wallflowers are probably one of the best scented flowers you can grow for Spring - Hyacinths and other bulbs smell gorgeous of course, but they come and go relatively quickly and while the weather is too cold to enjoyably sit out for long. These beauties are at their best when the air is warm and still so we can enjoy them all day and into the evening too.

You are correct - "Bishop's Children" are indeed sports of the old man of Llandaff [which we also have, needless to say, albeit a more recent purchase as a tuber]; we grew loads from seed at the last place, but only brought one variety with us when we moved - a proper "do-er" that is perfect for growing in a pot.
