Everyone here is a trophy

This decade began with such high hopes - we were all looking forward to the parties, the glitz and glamour that the new "Roaring Twenties" might bring. Then look what happened...

I had a really busy day yesterday in the (for a change) sunny garden, clearing the clag and detritis that comes with living underneath sodding sycamore trees. Today, it's drizzling. Again. Not much of a party. Sigh.

By way of some consolation, here's the ever-faboo Postmodern Jukebox, with their own tribute to that bygone era:

To be honest, I had never even heard the original - so here it is:

  1. I've seen PMJ twice in concerts. It was fun. And I really like his early arrangements, but the blossom has fallen from the tree, so to speak. The new stuff seems dull. This is part of the early stuff... when he was still fully engaged. I've never seen the Leonardo version of Gatsby. I adore Redford's take. Crazy Karen Black rubbing all her voodoo on the big screen... it was a scream. And everybody was singing... What'll I Do, when you, are far away... sigh. And I agree with you about this current era. I sure went to shite in quick hurry, didn't it? Kizzes.

    1. This is brand new. Mr Bradlee is playing the piano and arranged the music. If you find this dull, maybe the magic's worn off for you a bit..?

I've never seen either version of Gatsby, but it is an era I love - Bright Young Things, Gosford Park and Downton Abbey did the 20s justice, and I've always loved old Busby Berkeley movies. Nothing today seems quite so much fun, and the pandemic took away any chance that it could be. Jx

  2. Still blazing in sunny Devon - yes, it does make a change for me to be boasting about the weather!
    Like the tune!

  3. Plus, I also adore the Redford version of TGG, and really want to see the new one now that I've seen this clip!

    1. "Newer" one, surely? - it's eight years old...

The clips do look good - it is a Baz Luhrmann film after all! - but all the reviews I've read were scathing about the adaptation of F. Scott Fitgerald's original story. One critic said: "The problem is that when the movie is entertaining it's not Gatsby, and when it's Gatsby it's not entertaining." Jx
