And so, farewell, then, Mr Barrett Strong. Who? I hear you ask...
In a long, long writing partnership with the late Norman Whitfield, Mr Strong was a powerhouse songwriter for Motown Records, and many of his creations remain beloved classics to this day. Including these:
The Northern Soul dancefloor in Fabulon is filling to the brim as we speak...
RIP, Barrett Strong (5th February 1941 - 29th January 2023)
A brilliant talent. Great music today. Now I’m off to listen to other original versions. You’re an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWe aim to please... Jx
DeleteI have never seen such a good copy of that Levi's ad, the ones I've seen have always been blurry and fuzzy and never did justice to that beautiful boy, so thank you. Nick Kamen? I need to go do some research.
ReplyDeleteSadly, the beauteous Mr Kamen died two years ago - see my post in tribute. Jx
DeleteI had a friend who owned a 45 of that Flying Lizard song... it was yellow! Loved that damn thing. Loved Barrett's output. He wrote so many songs... talent like that? Once in a blue moon, my dear. Thanks for sharing. Kizzes.
ReplyDeleteI have the 7" single as well, but I don't think it's on yellow vinyl.
DeleteWith Mr Strong and Lamont Dozier gone, the age of genuinely talented songwriters is fading fast... Jx
"Just My Imagination" is a beautiful song.
ReplyDeleteMotown's brilliant songwriters gave us so many beautiful songs. How did things degrade so far from this level of talent all the way down to - cough - Jay-Z and Drake..? Jx
DeleteFantastic music, sweetpea! Y'all are right, songwriters of his caliber are few and very far away these days. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI rarely listen to what the benighted yoof of today are listening to, of course, but I wonder just how much of it would actually pass the test of time to the degree people would revere it as much as we do Motown today? Jx
DeleteThat is a tremendous output of fabulous songs and a clever mix of covers too I may add.
ReplyDeleteLove the 'Flying Lizards' nice to hear that again.
Always good to mix things up! I loved the Flying Lizards, too - and as I said to uptonking above, it's still in the collection! Jx
