ReplyDeleteI've not followed her career that closely - I am very proud to say I've never seen a single episode of Drag Race ever. I do remember her very earliest beginnings on Manhattan Cable, however... Jx

Deletei have a complicated relationship with Ru. I love her work and think she has been a real pioneer in queer visability and I admire that, but I think Drag Race has sort of codified a version of drag that too many people view has definitive.

Whereas drag queens used to stick to wigs, frocks and eyelashes that barely masked the fact it all concealed a talented man who could sing and crack dirty jokes, nowadays it's all "real" feminine curves, ridiculously over-complicated eye-makeup, and attitude, attitude, attitude... Jx
DeleteI agree Peenee. While I watch Drag Race and enjoy it...Ru seems to only promote the fishier and more editorial first. I think she seems to forget there are way more styles of drag...outlandish, campy, broke queen who throw a style together and otherwise....
DeleteNot sure I am familiar with the various "categories" you describe, but I do see a pattern in the type of queens who are promoted out of the gazillion series since it started, as opposed to the type of drag queens we're used to enjoying in the pubs. A world apart. Jx
