Gordon Merrick didn’t get a lot of respect for his writing. He was basically the Jacqueline Susann of gay literature. He stuck to stereotypes, but the sex was hot and there was even some empowerment for baby gays. I think the special problem for him was that he had explicit sex scenes in his novels. The Lord Won’t Mind was the only one I read -- long before I came out -- and it DID have an impact.
These made me think of Gordon Merrick? Do you remember him?
ReplyDeleteNever heard of him, sorry. Jx
DeletePS Edmund White, yes. Armistead Maupin, yes. Larry Kramer, yes.

DeleteOh, I read plenty of smut before I came out, too - but I never knew the authors' names... Jx
DeleteI read Gordon Merrick; as I recall, It was not bad, but very much Doomed Homos.
DeleteDoomed Homos are the worst. Jx
DeleteThey all seem to be rejected titles for my memoirs.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of you, needless to say 😂 Jx
DeleteJack Love made me giggle. Um...the title, I mean. Of course.
ReplyDeleteHave you not read "Gay Whore" then, Dinah? You do surprise me... Jx
