You are never gonna keep me down

I somehow doubt the bar staff at 'Spoons will be anything like this.

Our planned picnic having been unceremoniously cancelled thanks to the hurricane-force winds and rain battering the country at the mo ("Storm Evert", apparently), our little gang is gathering instead at the rather lovely former HQ of of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, now The Crosse Keys, a Wetherspoons pub.

We're starting at lunchtime, and I have no doubt it'll be another long session...

  1. Have a lovely time, dear. I wish I had such a crowd to hang with in such a manner. "You gotta have friends!" Am I right? I love the photo. And I know it is popular in the states to dismiss the song, but it always makes me smile. Kizzes. Enjoy, you bright young thing!

    1. It was a fabulous afternoon/evening of banter and badinage, and we didn't "get knocked down and get back up again" once! Jx

    1. I imagine when you were working in the City, the pub might well have still been a bank! It's a stupendous building. Jx

  3. My dear friend from Austin is visiting and we have a fancy dinner out tonight and then a fancy brunch for tomorrow scheduled. I can hardly keep up in this whirl of excitement.

    1. It's just a blessed relief to get out and do "stuff". Of course, true to "our gang", we chose a Wetherspoons, which about as far away from "posh" as Nicki Minaj is from Dame Joan Sutherland. Jx

  5. I visited a Witherspoons once, we were left waiting at the entrance for about 10 minutes, I didn't mind that as it gave me the opportunity to have a good look around, suss the place out, I was appalled to see a baby in a high chair eating spaghetti with it's hands, it's parents thought it was funny and was taking pictures of it covered in tomato sauce, then the hard faced server/cow or whatever they are called came up to us, no words of greeting or a curtsey or even a simple bob of the knees to which I am accustomed to. She said, it'll be a 50 min wait, coz we're short staffed due to Covid. I gave an exaggerated sigh of relief, pressing my hand onto my clavicle and said "THANK CHRIST FOR THAT" This was in Castleford.

    1. Thankfully this particular branch of Wetherspoons is of a slightly different calibre - by no means a classy clientele; they never are in such cheap venues - as its location in the City means it isn't really a destination for families or tourists. There were, of course, the inevitable stag parties and such, but none too raucous - and certainly, such groups of testosterone-and-Stella-fuelled lads are quite easy on the eye and make trips to the loos quite an experience...
